The TCBS entailed the relinquishment of pleasure, and perhaps life itself, as Smith wrote in his spring poem: There be still some, whose glad heart suffereth all hate can bring from her misbegotten stores.

The TCBS was a refuge for the members, but it also became a place where they could change the world. They felt that, for them, the war was just the preparation for the task that lay in store.
